Helluva Hunt – Douglas October 1, 2009
The Sacajawea club life members and active employees, for the last twenty four years have been serving lunch at the gun club in Douglas, WY for the disabled hunters on the first day of the Helluva Hunt (http://www.wildlifestudio.com/helluva-hunt/index.html). Pioneer members obtain community donations of food in order to have a complete lunch and afternoon snacks ready and waiting for the hunters upon their return to and from the field. The members consistently each October first every year gather for this effort and carpool from Casper to Douglas approximately one hundred miles round trip. They donate their time and mileage and make homemade stew from their own recipe and homemade cookies. They also make sandwiches, lemonade, and provide bottled water and coffee. Members begin preparing in early May for this event by ensuring they have enough volunteers signed up to serve lunch, bake homemade cookies, and make homemade stew.
It involves members reserving the entire day each year on October 1st to be available for the lunch activities. The Pioneers fulfill the need of providing the lunch to all participants during the hunt. Some Life members and their partners serve as hunting guides for the two days of hunting. Hunters have two guides to help during the event. The guides provide assistance in many ways by helping the hunters’ sight in their guns, provide assistance during a trap shoot on the day prior to the hunt, and help the hunter locate and bag their game. The Pioneers have traditionally served lunch for the one day of the hunt. There are possibly many other areas of assistance that Pioneers can provide during this three day event.
