GEOGRAPHIC  AREA

Geographically, the Golden West Council covers the western slope of Colorado.  The western slope is everything north to south and west of the continental divide.  This includes such cities in the north along U.S. Highway 40 to the Utah border as Steamboat Springs, Craig, Maybell and Dinosaur.  From the south and the Utah border and going east, it covers such cities as Durango, Cortez, and Gunnison.

I LIKE ME BOOKS

Our largest volunteer project is delivering “I Like Me” books to kindergarten children.  We have been involved with this project for 12-years.  Some of the students that have received these books have recently graduated from high school.  The program has been so successful that we find it very hard to drop, so we continue to support it with our funds and volunteer efforts.  Many other community agencies and groups also give us their support.  This year we have distributed over 750 books to very thankful kindergarten kids and their teachers.  A presentation of the “I Like Me” books was made at Rocky Mountain Elementary School in Clifton, CO.  The happy faces on the kindergarten kids faces are expressed in the photo below.

GUNNISON PIONEER MUSEUM

The Golden West Council established a telephone pioneer exhibit at the Gunnison Pioneer Museum in 2001.  Many volunteer hours and funds have been donated to the museum to make it one of the most attractive telephone museums in the state.  Please visit it!  It is open from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
